I was wondering how it is up there. Went over the hill to Medford the same day and was looking up there. It looked pretty bad for snow. At least the south side anyway. Perfect day for pics anyway. Where did you guys drop off? Heard last year there was an over anxious ranger giving out tickets to people dropping off on Old Pelican Butte Rd. via West Side Rd. Just heads up. Rumor it's a bald eagle habitat. Can only drop off the Cold Springs side only to be legal. Doesn't look like even enough snow to do that. Hopefully I'm wrong. Can't wait to see pics. Hate to say it Brown Mt. Looked like it had more snow. Snow is coming!

Funny thing is, I just posted about that ranger! http://www.sledspace.com/showthread.php?2842-Liars-butt-11-25-11&p=20080#post20080

Really funny thing is, we drop in on Old Pelican Rd. Its a 1/4 mile up from where you are suppose to go and drop off. Found out later that the week before the ranger wrote up 6~8 trucks that weekend. We went on a Monday (a bunch of us) and not a single one had a ticket! I guess he doesn't work Mondays. LOL Lucky for us!

There are some new signs posted up there! I'll post the pictures here soon....

There is some snow in the bowl that looks good! It faces North, so imagine that. I just went up there for the hell of it. No snow to ride a sled but took the wife's car and did a little snooping around....

Ok. Here are some pics I took yesterday of Pelican Butte. It is 26.4 miles from my driveway to the first parking lot to go ride! Its just to bad that there isnt any snow!

This is just a block or 2 up from my house.

Thanks for the update. I'm kind of in limbo anyway. Truck is getting new transmission. (that was spendy.) Snow should be coming soon. We'll have to get together and tear it up. (The snow anyway. So that ranger has nothing to complain about.) Haha.

Funny thing is this road boarders the outline area of the nesting..... The snow covers up this sign by now... Not this year!

wes,

The picture of the paved road off of west side road, is that the place we parked a couple of years ago when Mikey accidentally tagged the side of your sled? Just curious is that's still a legal place to unload and ride up...

Hey Pete, Thats where MJ nailed my sled a couple years ago. Also we parked there a couple of times last year. Except for Old Pelican Rd, Your not suppose to. Witch we did once last year. Old Pelican is a 1/4 mile pass of where your suppose to park.

I think you might be able to park @ Nannie Creek and Cherry Creek. The snowmobile trails go right through those 2 trail heads (on West Side Rd). I know people have parked there in the past with no problem. I'm thinking just because of the snowmobile trails do hit the beginning of the trail head and your off of West Side Rd. Ill post a map of it!

so where MJ nailed you is a ticket area now??? Oh boy... I'll be waiting for that map you talk about because I don't want a FS ticket this year. I plan on taking the sled up to Pelican a bunch this season.

Its not the ticket area. The next road up is (Old Pelican Rd)! So where we normally park is ok!

That's funny, I did TONS of work up in that area this summer.. The road that's closed due to eagle habitat I actually did the brush clearing on those three roads.. I still have the entrance permit too ;) hehehehe...

Pelican Rd is not a Eagle neasting area and its not a trail ether. Not sure why you cant park there but whatever.

Good information, thanks for posting and clearing the air. It looks like this area will be similar to Dutchman up in Bend. "The early bird gets the worm"

From what I remember, it'll only fit about 6-8 rigs, then you're SOL if the plow doesn't push us out a bigger area to park. We may need to talk to a few of the state drivers, and see what their beverage of choice is!

I'm pretty sure ~90% that pelican rd is a active timber sale/logging area (I cleared it and helped mark timber in that area, so that maybe the reason why it's a no park area

Oh and FYI, up the gated road, there's a few new access roads that were pushed this last summer that may allow a little easier access into some steep tree runs as well..

With a couple feet of snow there during winter time!? Really.... LOL

I saw a few trees marked in that area last year. There is a quick and easy way to get up wine bottle/ car hood that way! Not for the light hearted sledder but it sure is a lot of fun!

Yeah, a lot of the time sales are harvested during the winter (I was surprised too) but I think it has to do with minimal soil disturbance (dunno). I'll have to call and see if that area is being logged this winter, I know that it's been on the books for awhile..

That ground is super steep, and I fell A LOT walking around that ground.. I even got turtled in the brush a few times and had to have a co worker help me out. Haha

Ford428CJ
01-15-12, 08:02 PM
Those trees sure have been marked for a while now LOL. What part where you guys logging out of there? There are a lot of tree marked in that area!

Walking up that stuff would suck. Ridding up on a sled is AWESOME!

It was the Eagle timber sale area up there, there are tons of plots and we kinda bounced around day to day. But basically it was from pelican rd to about cherry creek on the west side of the hwy. some days we would do 200+ acres in a day.

I wasn't and don't log, but I was part of the FS crew that marked it

Never really rode between Pelican Rd and Cherry Creek! Just Pelican Rd up Pelican Mt. LOL I'm sure you saw some cool areas in there. The Eagle Nesting takes up a portion of that area. About a 1/3rd or so...

So To clarify this a little bit. From what I am seeing on the map the road we usually park on to go up pelican boarders the eagle nesting area. Is that off limits and where they were getting tickets? It is the road that is paved maybe 100 feet up in. or about 1/3 mile from the old pelican trail off west side.
Curious what the cost of one of those tickets were?

Pelican Rd doesn't boarder the nesting area at all. But for whatever reason (according to Diesel Dog) They are pulling logs out of there! I heard thats where a bunch of guys got the tickets. The next road up from Pelican Rd boarders the nesting area.

I haven't confirmed that there are logs leaving that area yet, office is closed today.. But, I do know that the area is a active timber sale. Whether the plots have been sold yet or not, I dont know, but hopefully should be able to find out tomorrow.

They were pulling logs in Dec and early Jan from the gated road 2 roads north of the Old Pelican road the one south of Cherry. There is some great riding in there but the boundaries are really vague once you start coming down from the bowl. When the snow is great there are no signs, gates or nothing. You can make out what might be a road but could also be an old skid road also. Never knew it went clear up to the trail on the north side. We have ridden south of the creek and up on the north side. Funny thing is I never have seen a bald Eagle up there when riding and have taken many of breaks. Oh well. I guess it doesn't count if you don't get caught. Not saying I try to break the laws but I can say Crater lake is definitely marked regardless if there is snow or not. Here is not.

One time... Off the side of the road (passed Pelican Rd , the next Rd up north. Just pass that a 1/4 mile or so) we dropped in right through that area. The funny thing is, all the cops, fire Dp and other rescue services where out off 140 for practice. Any way, we unloaded our sleds and took them across the road. Went back to the trailer and 2~3 cop cars went by and a Ranger did too. We waved at them that day and never got a ticket. This was the winter of 08~09. It was before the new Ranger showed up in-town. Found out later about the area we went up. Pelican is by far my favorite and closes place to ride!

That light green in the pic is probably the eagle habitat. You may want to delete that, the FS may come find you and give you a retro-ticket. ;)

Your right Dan... Not worth the ticket... I wont do that again. It was only one time that I did. Better off on Pelican Rd then off the side of the road. Theres another ticket! LOL:o
