During the January Avy 1 class I noticed that my boots were not drying completely overnight. Even after putting them over the heat vent they still stayed clammy in the toe box. Between sled boots, snowboard boots, ski boots, running shoes, various gloves, helmets, etc. it seems like we always have something in our “drying room” drying out. Thinking it would be nice to reduce dry time and wanting warm dry boots I thought I would try out a boot dryer.
I picked up the MaxxDryRP from Maxx Dry (http://www.maxxdry.com). The Maxx Dry RP (rider package) comes with all the accessories that a rider might want. It consists of the base MaxxDryXL unit, four drying tubes and anvils (for boots) and two helmet hog helmet drying attachments. This allows you to mix and match attachments and dry four garments at once (gloves, helmets, tall boots, short boots, shoes, etc.).
The base unit is very simple to use, with a heat/no heat/off switch and a timer. The timer allows you to operate the unit for up to three hours, and the switch obviously lets you choose whether you want it to operate with heat or ambient air. Beyond that, you just select the desired attachment, place the garment to be dried and go.
The MaxxDry pumps out a very subtle amount of 99 degree air. This keeps you from applying too much heat or air and damaging the garment, but is enough to successfully dry as needed.
I was able to use the MaxxDry on a recent three-day trip and it was awesome. It would dry my wet glove, boots or helmet in one cycle. I would then turn it on in the morning before putting my boots on to warm them up before leaving the house. I can see using the boot dryer for wet shoes and other items as well.
It will be nice to have warm dry boots and gear in the future. The added bonus is that drying your boots quickly helps prevent bacteria growth (smell), mold and fungus. If you are tired of stinky wet gear, think about the MaxxDry.
