Allow me to introduce myself, my name is John and I have been living and working at Diamond lake Resort for over 20 years now. I am a avid snowmobiler and believe that correct and honest information is crucial to the snowmobiling community. I am a member of OSSA and the local Roseburg club cascade connection or recognized better as cc riders. I started this thread to inform people of the conditions in our area. I will try to report any significant changes in the snow conditions weather they be good:D or bad:eek:.
Today we have 26" of snow in the lodge area, it is snowing lightly, 26 degrees and there have been quite a few sleds running around this weekend. Our groomer has been out and grooming trails all weekend, there is a lot of powder out there and it is deep. A couple of nice days would help it settle a bit.
We are running $59.00 motel rooms until December 22, for those of you that would like to put together a couple of days riding in a row. It costs about that much or more in fuel to go up and down the mountain each time.
Well that's it for now I hope you will find this thread useful.

glad to hear that, know i'll be going up on saturday!!!! great to be able to get some first hand info on whats going on up the hill. since rambob decided to retire my insider info has declined greatly:) parked up there on saturday the fellow running the gas station came out and showed me a better place to unload my sled, had it in the back of my truck. he even let me park right by the gas station so i didn't have to try and get in one of the other lots. also offered to help me get my sled out of the snowbank after i pulled it out. since i was one the pro i didn't need any help;) but i was very impressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can't get more snowmobile friendly than that:):):)

Thanks Sandman nice to hear good things about employees. We often only hear of the problems. I will pass your words on to the service station.
Cold this morning 7 degrees, no new snow over night. Sounds like another round of snow starting tonight or Tuesday morning.

It all depends on how many people are around. Last year it was not open much. When is your anniversary weekend this year?

We get bummed out too when the Thielson room isn't open but we got a tour of the remodelling being done in the Bailey Room downstairs and it is really beautiful. I think it's a nice addition to the facilities and a great compromise to keep things running during the slow times (or busy times!). Good job Diamond Lake!

It's on the 21 of December but we are planning to stay at Diamond from the 17th through the 19th of December.
I seem to remember the last time we stayed the resort we were invited to your x-mas staff party.
Had a great time talking to the gentleman that ran the gas station over that really good mexican feast.

Well looks like we got about 5" of new since early Tuesday morning temp has been 34 most of yesterday and all night. So you no it is real wet snow and there was some rain also. All this wet will help to make a solid base. Remember I am talking lake level I am sure it snowed up in the riding areas.

5" is good, doesn't compare to the 13" that the NOAA was calling for last night though!
trust me, they got better than 13 on the hill above the lodge

Great info....for anybody who isn't local to Diamond Lake, it is worth the drive to spend a weekend there. There are hundreds of miles of trails and so many great play areas!
If you want an extra special snowmobile weekend, book for the President's Day weekend (Feb 19-21) as the Rogue Snowmobilers and Diamond Lake Lodge put on a great poker run. $3000 in cash prizes plus there are always at least $500 and last year we had more than $1000 in door prizes. Diamond Lake puts on a great buffet dinner and it is always fun, fun, fun!!!

Okay it warmed up a bit earlier in the week, we needed moisure and we got it. It then cooled down and set up nice. We have a solid base of 25" at the lodge. Remember this is at lake level all our riding is higher, conditions improve as you go up from here. Looks like powder on the way next week, should be awsome riding.

Hello there, it rained a bit last night. Got reports from riders that from about half way up bailey connector on up there was good fresh powder. The trail to Crater lake NP is open and groomed. There is still plenty of snow at the lodge you can ride from the cabins on out.

Trip check.com must not tell the truth. It keeps saying their is no new snow. Thanks for the update john.
diamondlakediva
12-19-10, 08:34 AM
Tripcheck has been weird this year with the lack of updates! There was a ton of fresh snow coming down yesterday but not reported. Snotel is more accurate.
Some of them Tripcheck (ODOT) weather stations are not automated and the snow depth needs to read in person; so sometimes they dont get around to it for awhile. The Snotels sites are all satellite so the're more real time. The ODOT DL site is also in a 'goofy place' by the highway so its not always representative of whats going on in the woods farhter off the road
I looked at the snotell and it didnt match what john was saying it had snowed up at diamond lake. i plan on spending the week between christmas and new years up their and im getting a little nervous. last year i had to cancel my vacation due to lack of snow.

I would not try to give out false info, that will not do anyone any good. It really has not stopped snowing since Friday evening. Except for a couple hours here or there. The only way we will not have snow for the upcoming holiday season is if it warms up and starts to rain. If that happens I will report that just as fast as I would report a good snow fall. Anyway come on up the snow is fine!!!!

Ok it's been snowing for 2 days here at lake level. This is the time there is fresh powder everywhere and for sandman no groomers in site. Be carefull, although the lake is still frozen hard, fishing season opened last saturday so there are holes in the ice and fisherman on the lake. Hey come up bring your fishing pole and snowmobile to the cheese hole and go fishing. Thats something that you don't get to do often in Oregon!

The forest service is plowing the road from the north boat ramp to the information center / main campround entrance. You can still go around the back side of the lake. You can also get to the south end of the lake using the summit rock trail then pizza conector to the lake road. There is still lots of snow so come on up and ride.

Well it looks like winter is not over quite yet, they are calling for more snow this weekend. Just a update here: the lake IS NOT STABLE at this time. Do not recommend snowmobiling or ice fishing on the lake at this time. There is lots of snow and should be fresh powder again this weekend. The forest service has plowed the lake road from the north boat ramp to the information center. You can still ride out from the hilltop area and around the west side of the lake or use the summit rock trail.

Well its Thanksgiving weekend and there are a few sleds running around up here. We did groom the lake trail, bailey connect, three lake to lake west last week. Snow is thin between the resort and pizza parlor. Snow is good on back side of the lake. High elevation riding should be good this weekend.
On another note we have 13 used Ortovox X1 digital avalanche becons for sale. They are 7 years old do still work and we are looking to get $100.00 each for them. Contact me if you are interested.
We are running a special on rooms until the end of this month for $59.00 that includes this weekend. Check out our website www.diamondlake.net and look for diamond deals for the latest and greatest offerings.

Here we go no new snow yet but there is still enough to groom. I know there are some of you that think grooming is a waste of time and money. But grooming makes it easier to access the good stuff. It also allows us to ride further into the back country without running out of fuel. I know this is late but was not working last weekend.
On Wednesday December 7 we groomed:
From the hilltop to Summit Rock
On Thursday December 8 we groomed:
Around the Lake
Bailey Connect
Lake west to Three Lakes Snow Park
Three Lakes Snow Park to Three Lakes Junction (also 33 inch's of snow at three Lakes Junction)
Dog Prairie
And Skookum Prairie
On Friday December 9:
We groomed the Northern Exposure Cross Country Ski Area
We do try to cater to all winter recreation activities.
These trails should all be in good condition considering the cold temperatures we have been experiencing this last weekend and today our high was 24 degrees with a low of 12 degrees. Ice scratchers are a must in these conditions also.
I do suggest you ride out of the hilltop shop parking lot or Three Lakes Snow Park. The snow to ride out of the lodge area is thin at best.

i think grooming up around diamond lake/bailey is great!!! keeps the masses up there and away from my riding area's:) just don't go any farther towards windigo than the play area by hilltop, no need to bring peeps that way. nothing in that region but rocks and trees, heard the chances of avalanches is extremely high, lots of bear and bigfoot sightings, a good area to avoid at all costs;) i'm always thinking of the safety of others...

Bigfoot?????
89sandman
12-13-11, 07:39 PM
yes bigfoot, he was reported being seen with the abominable snowman. story as i heard it is they both attacked a group of trail riders, riping thier arms and legs from thier torso's in a mad rage and then took thier remains up around the kelsay loop area to feast on them later. a tragic story really, all could have been avoided if they had not groomed down that way. seems seeing the groomer had infuriated them, then they attacked the next people they saw. now you know why it would be best for peeps to avoid that area at all costs!!!;)

We did end up unloading and riding quite a bit on Saturday and Terry, V, and Burnie went for a night ride Friday too. That is until Burnie somehow busted his track and had to get towed back! Unless we find a cheap one, this might be the end of our season, just when it got started!!
Conditions up around Dog Prairie were good as well as the trails heading up that way, it was so nice Saturday we talked about going up on Bailey but heard that it was really icy that way so just hung around the 34 Lakes area. All in all, it was a great weekend!!

Last year there was a lady fed that worked the Crater Lake park area and it sounds like the same thing! None of us had our licenses on us but had to give her the numbers so she could run them. We were held up for quite awhile then too. I'm sure there are real criminals somewhere for them to harass!!
Just curious if this "Joanne" who also patrols the Fremont-Winema NF? I would describe her as 5'5", ~120lbs, short dark brown hair, slightly butch (chews Copenhagen), and somewhat brash.
Just curious if it's the same person as I've met on my Quad up north of Klamath. I understand they have a job to do, but they don't seem like they are very friendly about it. And don't they need some type of cause for a stop like local-law-enforcement? I mean the deputies in town can't just pull you over because you look funny and nothing more... And if they stop you on snowmachines you'd think they would be more positive and interested in education instead of enforcement.
I guess I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the above, just that when I ride I prefer to ride an areas where they just can't get to me. When I hear they are working Diamond Lake area, I'm more likely to go somewhere else.
Am I alone here?
one of the reasons i like to ride is to get away from people and not be bothered, anymore you can't go anywhere with out running into L.E. it's like the whole state is on lockdown. we probably would have more freedom in russia.

Iv'e been stopped locally by the police in town twice(both last year) diff. person both times. I was detained, sitting on my sled for what seemed like forever while they ran records, license everything they could think off. Presumably to see if there was a law, 1/2 a law an ordinance, a city code a...a...a.. who knows what- to come back and tell me to "take it easy" even tho THAT is the only way I ride in and around town.( the trail runs through town w/ branches off to get in town folks a way out w/o trailering). Oh they love to throw attitude, and ect. I'm not anti-law by anymeans, I'm antimean by the law!! I guess this stuff happens everywhere. Never thought about people going tru that in the mountains ect. I'm sure there is better things for them to do...especially in town. I suppose they're BORED around here this year. LOL...I guess I'll really have to look out for when we do get snow this year!!

Sounds fun! See you Friday!
John, my friend Lori Kimmel who I work with said to tell Cheech hi! I think he works maintenance, not sure. Maybe if he's up there Monday I can tell him myself. We'll likely stop by for some lunch in the Lodge/cafeteria.
Cheers,

Kilroy,
We are going to the poker run on Saturday then staying to ride Sunday and Monday. I would be great to ride with some people who know the area and some sledspace members. If your up for riding Sunday or Monday hit me up. Would be fun to explore a lot more than we did at last year's poker run.
We'll be there Monday, a group of about 4 or 5. Sildoc may meet up with us as well. Check your PM for my celly number.

Just a couple of pics from yesterday. The trails were in the best shape I have ever seen. Only a couple inches of fresh but still had a great day. Burger and beer at the lodge was awsome. Pete H

Only 'cause I was nice and gave it to him!
Definite highlight of the trip was stopping by the Diamond Lake Resort and having lunch. So sad to see businesses like this not getting the customers that they deserve because of the crappy winter we're having and a down economy. I'm certain they have seen better seasons. We pull up out front and they already have tables and chairs pulled together all ready for us. All the staff are so positive and helpful to the snowmobilers who stop by, we love the great service we get up there - Thanks you guys!
I challenge all of you to pack only snacks for the ride and stop by the lodge for a burger and drink at lunchtime/dinnertime. $11 for a nice Bailiey Burger, the use of a warm fire, restrooms, information, fellowship, good food, jobs for the employees, and an excellent location? Priceless IMHO...

Friday night is pizza night for us. Some of the best pizza around up there! Or the lodge makes a great roast beef panini these days too. Looks like it snowed again last night and the temps dropped to 17! Hopefully it holds up through the weekend.

Agreed, they bend over backwards to welcome snowmobilers and everyone!!!
Snow forecasted beginning Friday night all through the weekend.....should be a great weekend to get up to Diamond Lake for the Poker Run on Saturday. The lodge will be very prepared for a large crowd....last I heard there were a few rooms left. Always room for motorhomes in the boat launch area as well as in the overflow parking area!

Glad to hear you had a good ride and a good lunch. Nice mention about the trails also. We have one of very few if not the only private funded grooming programs in the state. OSSA does kick down some fuel monies but we own and maintain the equipment and pay the operators wages. So please let us know how we are doing good or bad. And yes please spend a buck or two so that we can keep the trails up and the lights on.
We did get about 3 inch's of snow overnight and looks like we will get more this weekend.

From Diamond Lakes grooming webpage just updated today:
New Snow in the last 24 hours: 5 inches
Snow base at Diamond Lake Resort (5,200 feet): 36 inches
Snow base at Three Lakes Junction (5,800 feet): 83 inches
All highways leading to Diamond Lake are open, plowed and sanded.
And from experience, Diamond Lake excels at grooming and goes above and beyond for the Poker Run every year!!

I had a great time up there on Saturday. I didn't do the poker run, but did stop at one of the check points where they had a fire goin. Snow was great, it would snow off and on up on top of Bailey. I would have loved to drop into the bowl, but didn't know avalanche conditions and wasn't goin to be the first one down383238333834383538363837
